Direct injection (DI) is a fuel injection system that precisely and directly feeds fuel into the piston’s combustion chamber inside the cylinder. In a pre-chamber, fuel and air are not mixed. DI variants are usually turbocharged, have traditional-looking flat-faced cylinder heads, and use lower compression ratios (15:1 to 18:1) than IDI engines. Furthermore, although the peak torque of IDI engines occurs earlier in the rpm range, the total torque produced by pound-for-pound DI power plants is far higher.
